Waxing lyrical: 4 reasons we like soy wax

Ever since I started I’m a little candle, people have asked me why we use soy wax in our candles over, say, paraffin wax or bees wax – or ear wax. Just joking about the ear wax. That’s disgusting. All the different kinds of wax have their benefits, but we choose soy because it’s right for us.

Without further ado, here are four reasons why we use soy wax in our candles.

1. It’s sustainable

Soy wax is natural and renewable. Paraffin candles are made from fossil fuels, the reserves for which are dwindling. Of course, the world can always grow more soy beans and that’s good for candles, Chinese food, posh milk – everything!

2. It’s clean

When you burn a paraffin candle, that’s what goes into the air. Because soy wax is natural and non-toxic, it means you don’t get soot on your walls and it doesn’t release anything potentially dangerous into the air, except a dangerously good scent, of course! (*dad joke klaxon*)

3. It’s biodegradable

If you burn a lot of candles, you’re going to spill one. Well, at least you will if you’re as clumsy as me. If you knock over a soy wax candle, no problem. It’s clean and non-toxic, so all it takes is a cloth and some soapy water to clean it up. You’ll probably be scrubbing a little longer with a paraffin candle.

4. It burns for longer

Because it has a lower melting point, soy wax burns longer than paraffin wax. That means a soy wax candle is excellent value for money. Obviously, as someone who makes soy wax candles, I would say that. But, honestly, it’s true. Ask Google.

And finally, a word on paraffin wax...

It wouldn’t be fair to talk about how great soy wax is without giving paraffin wax – another popular material for candles – a shout out too. One thing to be said for paraffin wax is that it burns quicker and for many paraffin candles, that means a stronger hot throw, that’s a measure of how a candle’s scent fills a room.

Of course, we think we can get a pretty great hot throw with our soy candles, you just need to create a deep melting pool. So, why not try one of our little candles today?
